Chemomechanical degradation of cellulose is desirable for a range of textile and biomedical applications. It is also a key process that regulates the degradation of biopolymer-based materials. In this study, a dissolution-based approach was employed to form cellulose-based biomaterials with uniform degradation rates and a high degree of physical homogeneity. An in situ radical polymerization technique was used to produce a cellulose hydrogel containing a unique indocyanine green (ICG) dye that was incorporated into the organic matrix via a covalent bonding. The dye-containing polymer was formulated as an aqueous solution to minimize the environmental impact of the method, and it was successfully applied to fabric to demonstrate its applicability. The polymer was characterized and the stability of the ICG was confirmed. After immersion in boiling water, the dye was completely decomposed, and the polymer survived. However, when the polymer was immersed in PBS, only 30% of the dye was degraded in 7 days. The dye was successfully embedded into the hydrogel matrix by connecting two carbonyl groups in the ICG-containing polymer. This was observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The mechanism of the cleavage of the polymer was also investigated by quantum chemical calculations.
